The latter stage of HIV infection is known as AIDS. Not every HIV positive person will get AIDS. With proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. When the number of CD4 cells falls below a critical level, or when someone has certain opportunistic infections, they are considered to have progressed to AIDS.
